Development Control Plan, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle Upon Tyne
The development of master plan for The Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust looked at all of the main hospital sites, Freeman Hospital, Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Centre for Ageing and Vitality (CAV, formerly Newcastle General Hospital) as well as the outlying minor holdings.
The rational was to identify redundant areas for demolition and redevelopment along with incorporating all of the current and planned developments Trust wide.
The brief also required the identification of potential development sites for future consideration.
This scheme followed up the work undertaken in 2000 at the RVI site, consolidating the development plans following the completion of the New Victoria Wing and other primary office spaces and to further rationalise and build on previous work, but working across all three sites. The work also involved identifying any decanting strategies required to facilitate the moving and redevelopment of various departments.
