Redevelopment of a significant city centre block in a sensitive area of Grainger Town. The existing buildings are to be replaced by a contemporary scheme incorporating three hotels, significant ground and basement retail space and approximately 40,000sqft of commercial office space. Extensive consultation was necessary with the City Council and English Heritage to ensure the scheme was in context with Grainger Town, respected the surrounding architecture and urban grain, and addressed the existing street hierarchy. Research into historic street patterns has led to the opening up of the existing city block by the creation of a new ‘Chare’ through the centre of the scheme from Newgate Street through to the rear of the Old Assembly Rooms where a new city square is to be created. The line of Newgate Street is also to be brought forward to reflect the original medieval curve. The scheme received detailed planning approval in March 2009.
